To handle the fact, discussed earlier, that learners must be able to learn a language from positive evidence only, the unmarked parameter settings in UG are always the most conservative, or restrictive, i.e. those which accurately represent the properties of some of the world's languages in the areas of grammar they concern, but which are able to be modified to reflect the grammar of other languages simply through the learner experiencing utterances (positive input) which trigger different (more marked) settings of a particular parameter.
